The Key to Organization (Key Organization Systems, 2013)
Make a Realistic Plan
Always remember it is more beneficial to actually learn the material instead of just finishing the course. As an adult, you probably don’t have time to go to school full time, especially while also raising a family. Prior commitments will endure, but you must prevail. Consider speaking with an academic advisor for guidance on how best to meet your needs, while considering your demands and projected goals.
Strike a deal with your family
Most adults sacrifice personal time to go back to school. Talk with your family and they will understand knowing what you are trying to accomplish. Always remember that your family is there to support you knowing that you are working towards the betterment of yourself and the future stability of your loved ones.
Become a better student
Being an adult learner can be easier as it is a choice that we have made, unlike when we were younger and were made to go to school. As a responsible adult, we should be able to overcome distraction and stay focused. Time management is invaluable and is definitely the key to success.
Remind yourself what you’re trying to achieve
We need to find the motivation to keep us pushing forward and to achieve our goal(s). Try to find motivators, such a post-its, pictures or asking friends/relatives to encourage you. As an adult learner, there are many distractions in our lives that come with being a spouse or a parent. It can be quite easy to get off track and fall behind. The key is to stay focused and recognize any potential obstacles that may throw you off track.
All four points in the key to time management can be related to Maslow's Heirarchy of needs. Although he based it on a pyramid shaped model with basic needs at the bottom, not everyone will classify their needs in this sequence. Different life situations may alter a persons classification of needs at any given time.
